Science mounts scare

Francis Lewis has aspirations of playing for the city championship, but the Queens power learned that any little lapse could cost them such an opportunity.

Leading by two goals, the second-seeded Patriots seemed to get too comfortable. Bronx Science’s Andrew Vogel scored with less than three minutes remaining to put a scare into Francis Lewis.

But that’s all it was in a 4-2 victory over No. 15 Bronx Science in the second round of the PSAL Class A playoffs.

“[Bronx Science] came and showed us that there not only third in their division but they can be competitive,” Francis Lewis coach Roger Sarmuksnis said.

“We were a No. 15 seed, but it’s just a number,” Bronx Science coach Philip Cancellaro said. “We played much better than a 15 seed. Disappointing is the only way to describe this loss.”

Coming off a dismal 1-7-3 record last season, Cancellaro, a first year coach, felt that the way his team proved how far it had come in one year against the powerhouse Patriots. Labourdette was proud of his team’s effort, too, but thought they could have given more.

“We fought back and we gave ourselves a chance and it wasn’t enough,” he said. “We didn’t work hard enough and they outplayed us.”
