The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority has acknowledged Albert Einstein College of Medicine for an efficient design that will significantly reduce the amount of energy used in its newest building.
“Albert Einstein is not only one of our nation’s premier healthcare institutions, it’s also a leader in helping New York reduce its carbon footprint,” noted Francis J. Murray Jr., President and CEO of NYSERDA.
On Friday, November 13, NYSERDA representatives visited the newly constructed Michael F. Price Center for Genetic and Translational Medicine, also known as the Harold and Muriel Block Research Pavilion, at 1301 Morris Park Avenue, to present Einstein with a congratulatory plaque.
Thanks to $400,000 of incentives from NYSERDA, Einstein was able to reduce its electrical consumption at the building to the tune of an estimated $144,000 each year.
The new building boasts high-efficiency lighting, a heat recovery system, high-efficiency motors and high-efficiency, steam powered cooling system. Salvatore Ciampo, Einstein’s senior director of facilities management, took guests on a tour of the building to demonstrate how some of the efficient features operate.
“Through creative thinking and hard engineering we‘ve committed our resources to the reduction of greenhouse gases,” Ciampo said.
NYSERDA has assisted on 900 construction projects in ten years but has only awarded 19 “High Performance Building” plaques.
Einstein also participates in a “demand response” program. It uses backup generators during critical times to reduce energy consumption.
“Einstein is totally committed to reducing its impact on the planet,” Ciampo said.
