One day after finishing fourth in the ING New York City Marathon, elite runner Ryan Hall took time to hand out book bags and other school supplies to teachers who will distibute them to children in need.
Hall stopped by World Vision at 855 E. 138 Street on Monday, November 2 to fill several hundred backpacks with school supplies and distribute them to teachers at World Vision’s Teacher Resource Center.
World Vision is a Christian faith-based organization that helps fight poverty in the Bronx, United States and around the world. Its Teacher Resource Center helps teachers who have students who are poor.
“In the Teacher Resource Center, we give away free school supplies to teachers in the south Bronx and Washington Heights,” said World Vision general manager Tim Reeve. “Supplies are donated to World Vision, and we pass them on to teachers free of charge.”
Hall and his wife Sara spent part of the day stuffing donated backpacks with paper, folders, pens, pencils, rulers, crayons, and other school supplies. Hall said that he and his wife were contacted by World Vision and found it to be a quality organization.
“After the Olympic Marathon trials, we were here in New York and World Vision gave us some ideas how we could raise awareness among runners about global poverty,” Hall said. “We also recently started the Hall Steps Foundation to mobilize runners to combat poverty both domestically and internationally.”
