Van Nest men nabbed with guns and drugs

The 49th Precinct continues to clean up the Van Nest community, with four more criminal arrests for possession of a weapon.

On Friday, December 4 at approximately 2:05 p.m., Javier Castro, a 27-year-old male, and Carlos Perez, a 22, were arrested together for possession of a weapon at Van Nest and Bronxdale avenues.

Castro, a resident of 2531 Frisby Avenue, was also found in possession of a controlled substance. Perez, a resident of 1640 Hone Avenue, had prior arrests for robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery. Detective Carlos Lozada of the Bronx Narcotics Unit made the arrest.

On the same day, at approximately 2:30 p.m., Lozada locked up Yorby Mercedes, a 17-year-old male, in front of 1730 Garfield Street. Mercedes, a resident of 1742 Holland Avenue, had prior arrests for possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, sale of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana. Mercedes had been arrested for dealing drugs at Amethyst Street and Morris Park Avenue.

“This was really a fantastic job by Narcotics,” 49th Precinct Captain John Greeley said.

Early in December, police arrested 1106 West Farms Road resident Sharif Thompson, a 22-year-old black male. In response to a radio report of shots fired, police found Thompson in front of 1732 Unionport Road in possession of a weapon.

Police Officer Rafale Dillegas and Police Officer Avalon Beazer made the arrest. Thompson had six prior arrests in Queens – five for selling marijuana and one for criminal trespassing.
