Little Fashion Week for area youth

Hoping to inspire the creativity of youngsters throughout the Bronx, the first ever Little Fashion Week Contest will be held in Westchester Square.

The Little Fashion Week Contest was the brainchild of Sandi Lusk, head of Westchester Square-Zerega Improvement Organization, who has also being running children’s’ programs at the Westchester Square Library for over 19 years.

“Kids are amazing, they come up with the most gorgeous things,” said Lusk.

“This is a unique event that we want all kids to enter. We think it will be really fun for them.”

The contest was made possible through collaboration of WSZIO, the Owen Dolen Recreation Center through the Department of Parks & Recreation, the Bronx Council of the Arts, and the Association of Merchants and Professionals of Westchester Square.

“We are trying to build up our partnerships to bring the whole community together and enhance their experience,” said Robert Wright, Bronx chief of recreation for Parks.

Open to children age 7 to 10, who will be asked to design and create an ensemble for a 12-inch doll, of any gender the child may choose.

They should also include a decorative background display.

Guidelines for the display include a 16” to 20” width and height, with a 6” to 8” depth.

Decorations may include, but are not limited to photos, drawings, collages, and paintings, and props are optional.

Fashions for the doll can consist of anything that is not a purchased item, with the exception of accessories such as shoes.

Those wishing to enter should write a short biography of themselves, including name, age, school, and a description of their entry.

Other sponsors for the event include Senator Jeff Klein, Councilman James Vacca, and Assemblyman Michael Benedetto.

The judges will be provided through the BCA. Each of the three winners will receive a $150, $100, or $50 prize.

All contestant will receive a certificate and prizes will also be distributed.

“This is a significant event because it’s the first collaboration like this and hopefully it will be a success and we will have many events to follow,” said Lusk.

The preliminary screening will occur on March 14 at 2 p.m. at the Owen Dolen Recreation Center, located at 2551 Westchester Avenue.

There the children’s creations will remain on display until the final judging on Saturday, March 21 at 2 p.m.
