Maj. Michael N. Clancy, of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, is being promoted the rank of lieutenant colonel.
Lt. Col. Clancy is a native of City Is-land and graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Management. He joined the district in July 2009 and serves as the deputy district commander. In that position, he serves as the second in command of the District that is responsible for the Corps’ water resource development, navigation, and regulatory activities in northeastern New Jersey, eastern and southcentral New York State, including the New York Harbor and Long Island, and parts of Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. The District is also responsible for design and construction at Army and Air Force installations in New Jersey, New York, Virginia and overseas in Green-land. The District has various missions in and around the Bronx, including eco-system restoration work in Soundview Park which recently moved forward to-ward completion, and plans to add sand to Orchard Beach to fight erosion and provide flood protection.
Prior to his present leadership assignment at New York District, Lt. Col. Clancy has served in a variety of units throughout the United States and the world. These have included three assignments in Iraq, one as a combat engineer with the 1st Armored Division, one constructing support facilities as the 3rd Corps Support Command Engineer, and one serving as the resident engineer for South Baghdad with the Corps of Engineers Gulf Region Central District – which is part of the Corps’ massive re-construction effort there.
“I’m grateful for all of the experiences I’ve had and people I’ve met throughout my military career and I look forward to serving the Army and the nation at the next rank,” Lt. Col. Clancy said.
His military decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (third award), Meritorious Service Medal (fourth award), Army Commendation Medal (second award), Army Achievement Medal (second award), National Defense Service Medal (second award), the Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terror Service Medal, the Combat Action Badge, and the Bronze de Fluery Medal. Along with his degree from West Point, Lt. Col. Clancy also has a Masters of Science degree from the University of Missouri-Rolla and one from Columbia University.
