The 49th Precinct has once again undergone a change in leadership, with Captain Kevin Nicholson stepping in as the newest commanding officer.
Inspired by his father, a retired 22-year NYPD veteran, Nicholson began his career at the 20th Precinct, on the upper west side of Manhattan, in January 1992.He then spent a year teaching at the police academy before earning the rank of sergeant in the 26th Precinct in Harlem.
The ambitious Nicholson first came to the Bronx when he was promoted to lieutenant in 2001, serving at the 50th Precinct.He achieved the rank of captain in January of 2005.
Nicholson was the executive officer of the 47th Precinct for some time before be was transferred to the Bronx Narcotics Division, acting as the commanding officer, covering the 47th, 49th and 52nd precincts.
Of Nicholson’s 18 of service for the NYPD, half of his career has been in the Bronx, and he considers himself a Bronx guy.
“I’m happy as all heck, ecstatic to be in this position,” said Nicholson.“I enjoy being in the Bronx and having the ability to stay in the Bronx.”
Nicholson began his first day as the 49th Precinct C-O on Monday, April 5.
Having been already familiar with many areas of the 49th Precinct through his time with narcotics, Nicholson is eager to continue improving the quality of life for people in the precinct and working on crime reduction.
On Wednesday, April 14, Nicholson met with community leaders to introduce himself and his plans for the 49th Precinct.
Nicholson intends to encourage local businesses and property owners to invest in security cameras.He also made it clear he will not tolerate police officers being disrespectful to the community.
“I intend to encourage community involvement,” said Nicholson.“Right now it’s just a matter of adjusting to the position and learning the responsibilities.”
Additionally, Nicholson has begun plans to improve the appearance of the 49th Precinct building, home to 217 police officers.He will be asking community members to submit banner designs, and will select one to be painted over the 49 blue poles found in front of the building.Details for anyone wishing to participate will soon be released.
Residents can meet the new C-O at the next 49th Precinct Community Council meeting on Tuesday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m. at Bronx House.
