Civic Center

The Van Nest Community Association would like to wish everyone a healthy and happy new year. Our seniors had their Holiday New Year’s get together last week at the association. Everyone that attended had a great time. We would like to thank Congressman Joe Crowley, Senator Jeff Klein, and Assemblywoman Naomi Rivera, Councilman Joel Rivera, and Councilman James Vacca for their continued support of our community not just financially but on all of our quality of life issues as well. A perfect example of that is Senator Jeff Klein’s effort to bring a bank into the Van Nest community so our residents and business people do not have to travel all over the Bronx to conduct our banking affairs and can conduct them right here in our community. We recently had a meeting with some of the banks and already have an offer by one bank that will put in the application to the State Banking Commission to open a branch in the Van Nest community. We will continue to push for the bank and do whatever is necessary to assist in getting a bank to open in our community.

The Van Nest Community Association does not belong to one person or group. It belongs to every resident in the Van Nest community. I understand that in today’s mode of thinking if it’s old, it’s outdated and obsolete. That may be true for mechanical and definitely for electronics, but the Van Nest Community Association is a living entity empowered by its membership and changing with the infusion of new active members sharing their prospective of what the needs and concerns of the residents in the Van Nest Community.

Everyone has to work together as one group, one voice shouting out the needs and concerns of our entire community. To repair one block or two and hope the rest will get better by its self is like shoveling in a wind storm – it may look good for a moment or two but the sand will be blown right back every time. You can keep shoveling and hope the wind dies and never comes back or everybody has to stand together and become the wall that stops the wind so we can get all the sand out and keep it out. The choice has always been yours. You can do nothing or try to do it yourself or come to the reality that this is not a one person job and that we have to work together to achieve the same goals every one of us want and what the Van Nest Association was founded for “To Keep Van Nest A Safe Well Maintained Community.”

Our January meeting will be on Monday, January 18, at 7 p.m. at the association, 661 Morris Park Avenue. You can contact us at (718) 792-2925 Monday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. or leave a message with a call back number and we will get back to you.

Hope to see you at the meeting.
