Mural protests immigration injustice

A Chilean born artist directed the painting of a mural visible from the Bruckner Expressway which took a bold stance on the immigration debate currently sweeping the country.

An artist called Dasic, in collaboration with the Rebel Diaz Arts Collective, painted the mural which reads “No Human Being is Illegal.”

The mural is on the second floor wall of a rooftop facing the west bound Bruckner Expressway near East 149th Street. The sign, which includes the phrase popular among advocates for immigrants includes other images serving as symbols of humanity. It was painted by a group of artists with community help on Thursday, April 29 and Friday, April 30.

The mural on the building at 478 Austin Place is one in a series of works by the Rebel Diaz Arts Collective, a group known for using hip hop music and graffiti to spread their message about the injustices faced by oppressed groups. It was painted in time for the annual May Day protests in Manhattan’s Union Square calling for full rights for all
