SAL BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP

South Bronx inched closer to its second straight Bronx A East title Thursday night in typical fashion: by outscoring the opposition in what was the basketball version of a track meet. Dashawn Joyner scored 33 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and dished out nine assists, leading the Phoenix to a 102-95 victory over Smith.

Elijah Huggins added 19 points and Terrynce Wilson had 18 for South Bronx, who held Smith center John Hargrove center to just 19 points, although guard Jahffet Manning had 33 points.

“Smith has a good team,” South Bronx coach Doug Porter said. “They were all we wanted.”

The Phoenix (19-2, 15-0 Bronx A East) edged the Warriors (12-2) last year in Bronx A East, but had their slipups, losing two league games. Thus far, South Bronx is undefeated in league play, and its only losses are to ‘A’ challengers Bedford Academy and FDR. Porter’s club has city championship hopes, but winning the division title is a nice a stepping stone.

“I never take those lightly,” Porter said. “Our first goal every year is to win a division title. What’s what you start with. We liked to play well in the boroughs, and our next goal is to win a city title and go states. That starts with winning division titles.”
