Beautiful weather has arrived, and now laptop users can take a trip to some local parks and surf the Internet outdoors.
Many people who own laptops usually have a hard time finding a wireless connection outside of their homes, but Mayor Bloomberg and AT&T have come up with a five-year initiative that will allow computer users on-the-go to search the web in relaxing locations starting this summer.
On Thursday, June 9 in Thomas Jefferson Park in Harlem, Mayor Bloomberg and AT&T chairman and CEO Randall Stephenson announced that free Wi-Fi, wireless Internet, will now be available in certain locations within 20 New York City parks, including three right here in the Bronx.
Throughout the summer, visitors of Joyce Kilmer Park, Bronx River Park, and Devoe Park, will be able to stay connected to the Internet via laptop computers, smartphones, tablets, and other Wi-Fi enabled electronics as they enjoy the warm weather for the next few months.
“In May, we laid out a strategy to make New York City the nation’s leading digital city, and AT&T’s generous initiative to bring Wi-Fi to 20 city parks will help us get there,” Mayor Bloomberg said. “New York City has the greatest network of public parks in the world, and we’ve invested heavily to expand and enhance them. Now, thanks to the terrific corporate citizenship of AT&T, they will provide an even better experience for New Yorkers and visitors.”
This latest initiative was another goal developed as part of “Road Map for the Digital City,” which is New York City’s comprehensive strategy to make the city the country’s leading digital city.
“Park visitors will now have more options to surf the net while enjoying the great outdoors of New York City’s open spaces,” said Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe.
