Bronx Catholic schools hold massive science fair

Catholic grade schools from around the borough had their students compete for prizes in the Bronx Catholic Schools Science Fair at Mount St. Michael Academy recently.

About 328 Catholic School students representing 37 Catholic K through 8 schools in the borough had a panel of expert teachers and administrators judge their talents as “budding Einsteins” at the science fair on Thursday, March 22.

“Science is hands on and this gives the children the opportunity to work with each other and their families on the projects,” said Bronx Catholic Schools Superintendent Roseann Carotenuto.

“This is the 26th year we have had a borough-wide science fair for kindergarten through 8th grade.”

Each of the entrants were judged against peers for each of the grade levels, from tenth place to first place, Carotenuto said.

Those projects coming in third through first place received ribbons, with the first place student or team also taking home a medal and a trophy for their school, Carotenuto stated.

This year is the last year organizers can expect to have the help of Jackie Phelan, a long-time administrative assistant to Carotenuto who has been instrumental in organizing the event for many years and who will retire at the end of this school year, Carotenuto stated.

Carotenuto and Phelan, and administrative assistant Maria Mercado, supervised a committee of judges that included teachers and administrators from around the Bronx Catholic schools.

These judges included John Carbone, Jennifer Dentico, Jackie Foglia, Maryann Fusco, Cecile Rodriguez, Michelle Pasquale, Annette Schmid, and Andrea Tolisano.
