While Bronxites join other New Yorkers out of town, at beaches and at the barbecue grill, City Islanders will be remembering the nation’s fallen veterants with a Memorial Day parade on Monday.
Hundreds of sailors and marines will line City Island Avenue for the City Island Memorial Day parade this year.
The parade will step off at 2:30 p.m. on Winter Street.
This year, along with the Monaghan Bagpipe Band, the Salesian High School band will also perform.
A number of American Legion posts from across the Bronx will also be joining in the line of march, said Robert Mennona, service officer for American Legion Post 156.
The parade will head down City Island Avenue, making stops along the way.
“We will have a ceremony at the monument at Hawkins Park on Hawkins Street, then proceed on to Pelham Cemetery, have a small ceremony there, and finally proceed on to the monuments at the City Island Bridge and have a ceremony there,” Mennona said.
The ceremonies will include remarks by the post commander, laying of wreaths on the monuments, and a salute with rifles.
The City Island Little League, as well as the Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops from the area will also march in Monday’s parade.
The parade will conclude at the Leonard Hawkins American Legion Post at 550 City Island Avenue, with free hot dogs, soda and beer for all those who attend.
