Throggs Neck Benevelont Association dinner dance set for January 21

It’s that time of year again.

Preparations are underway for the Throggs Neck Benevolent Association’s annual dinner dance. The celebration will be held on Saturday, January 21 at the Marina del Rey. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $90 per person. Attendees can go solo, in couples or purchase full tables that sit between eight and 12 people.

As always, the event will raise money for the TNBA to distribute to community members in need throughout the year.

And in addition to supporting a good cause, attendees will enjoy one of the neighborhood’s biggest social events of the year. The TNBA’s dinner dance has been dubbed the “Throggs Neck reunion,” for the way it brings long-time friends and neighbors together for one night.

The dinner dance will also feature a raffle. Most items will be sports-related. The biggest confirmed prize is a pair of seats from the old Giants Stadium.

“It’s a great chance for people to come out, spend time with their family and friends, and enjoy themselves at a great location close by,” said TNBA board member Karin O’Connor, who is organizing the dinner dance. “It’s a great night. People have referred to it in the past as the reunion because people grow, and some move away but we’ve found they often come back and see old friends and hopefully make new ones.”

And despite the celebratory atmosphere, the theme of the evening will helping neighbors and the spirit of generosity.

“The premise is to help raise funds for families in need,” O’Connor said. “Say, for example, someone develops cancer and they have insurance to cover most of their cost but maybe there’s an experimental drug, or they’re doing dialysis treatment or cant pay to get there. It’s this stopgap measure that we help provide money, for neighbors when they need it.”

About 300 people attend most years, and O’Connor expects a similar turnout for the 2012 edition.

“There’ a lot of collaboration that goes into this,” she said. “And that’s one of the things we like most about our neighborhood.”
