While local legislators fight overnight truck parking, Community Board 10 will hold a public hearing next week to establish alternate side parking on Saturdays along a stretch where trucks often park illegally.
The September 11 hearing, at Board 10 offices at 3165 E. Tremont Avenue, will focus on creating the no parking from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. zone along Pelham Bay Park on Bruckner Boulevard, between Middletown Road and Wilkinson Avenue.
The official purpose of the plan is to facilitate street cleaning, said district manager Kenneth Kearns.
“The board has been active in many ways exploring limiting parking for overnight trucks, including in that area around Middletown Road and Bruckner Boulevard,” said Kearns, who took pains to explain that the issue here is not mainly overnight parking of trucks.
The stretch of Bruckner is one of those that has been hardest hit by truckers who park their cabs and rigs on city streets instead of paying for a motel, or stopping in New Jersey or Connecticut for the night.
Elected officials including Senator Jeff Klein, Assemblyman Michael Benedetto, Assemblyman Marcos Crespo, and Councilman Jimmy Vacca called on the city Department of Transportation to enforce fine schedules passed into law in 2010 that raise the fine for a tractor-trailer parking overnight from $65 to $250 for a first offense, and $500 for a second offense.
