The Bronx will remember the 11th anniversary of 9/11 with ceremonies that celebrate the lives of the 143 borough victims who died that day.
One of the largest remembrances will be the annual one at Jacobi Medical Center.
This year’s ceremony will start at 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday, September 11 in the Memorial Grove, which bears plaques with the names of the Bronx’s fallen, near the main entrance to the hospital.
The event will include moments of silence for the minutes when, 11 years ago, two planes hit each tower of the World Trade Center, as well as a color guard, bagpipes, a poem read by the medical center’s community advisory board, and brief remarks from hospital representatives and elected officials, said Jacobi spokeswoman Anna Pomaro.
Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and the Supreme Court of Bronx County will also remember the fallen, though not on 9/11 itself.
Their ceremony will take place on the steps of the Bronx County Building at 851 Grand Concourse from noon to 2 p.m. on Friday, September 14.
The second annual 9/11 First Responders Barbecue, hosted by Senator Jeff Klein, will be held at Orchard Beach on Saturday, September 15 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and is open to first responders to 9/11 and their families.
“It’s my privilege to recognize the incredible service that police, firefighters, EMTs, and all first-responders provide us with each and every day,” said Klein. “When crisis calls, these men and women are on the scene, showing us what it means to be a true hero. This is just one, small way, that we can recognize their sacrifice.”
Klein said the event will also honor two of the “community’s most well-known heroes,” Deputy Inspector Russell Green and Deputy Inspector Kevin Nicholson, recently transferred commanding officers of the 45th and 49th Precincts, respectively.
The celebration of the bravery of uniformed personnel and volunteers on September 11th will includes food, live music by band FDR Drive, and face painting and games for the kids.
Various veterans groups, Sabrett, Pepsi, Manhattan Beverage, Frank Bee’s Carnival Time are co-sponsoring the First Responders Barbecue. For more information, call Klein’s office at (718) 822-2049.
In Co-op City, a candlelight vigil called the Circle of Lights: In Remembrance of September 11th, 2001, will take place on September 11th on the Section 1 greenway from 6 to 8 p.m. Organizers are asking the public to arrive between 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. and to bring their own candles.
That remembrance is being organized by the Warfront to the Homefront Foundation, Inc, which also remembers and honors “those who have died since as a result of that horrific day” from cancer and respiratory-related diseases.As of press time, the annual Throggs Neck 9/11 remembrance was still being planned. The event usually takes place at sundown, at around 7 p.m., on September 11 at the community’s 9/11 memorial at the Cross Bronx Expressway service road at East Tremont Avenue.
