Brian Nash, Throggs Neck’s former post office manager and a longtime fixture and unsung hero of the community there, passed away recently.
Nash, 55, was the manager of the Throgs Neck Station of the post office before his retirement three years ago, and a volunteer for decades with the Throggs Neck Volunteer Ambulance Corps, starting about 1980 until the mid-2000s.
He served as both chief of operations and as chairman of the volunteer ambulance group, said TNVAC president Bill Heaney.
Nash was also a past member of Community Board 10, said Heaney, a current board member of the board.
Nash was also involved in all of the beach clubs in the Throggs Neck area, added Heaney, and according to a bio, served on the board of directors of the American Turners New York and the White Cross Fishing Club.
“The biggest thing that he offered was his dedication, whether it was as an Emergency Medical Technician or teaching new EMTs and drivers at the ambulance,” said Heaney “He was just a dedicated, community oriented person.
“People knew him from both the post office and from the ambulance corps.,” said Heaney, adding that “because of his prowess at the ambulance corps, he became a lifetime member of the TNVAC.”
Aside from his dedication to the ambulance corps., Peter Nash said his brother was also the president of the Holy Name Society for Catholic postal workers, as well as the vice-president of National Association of Postal Supervisors, Branch 459 (Bronx branch).
But first and foremost, he was a Throggs Neck person, through and through, said his brother.
“He was born and raised in Throggs Neck,” he said. “He lived his whole life on Barkley Avenue.”
Nash, as did Heaney, said his brother was dedicated to the ambulance corps and to community endeavours.
“He was always trying to help others,” he added.
Nash died of pneumonia at Einstein Medical Center on Saturday, May 18.
He is also survived by another brother, Michael, as well as several nieces and nephews that he adored, said Peter Nash. Another brother, Hugh, is deceased.
