Spring into a fun day along East Tremont Avenue this month.
In what promises to be great day along the main shopping thoroughfare, the Throggs Neck Merchants Association is presenting its annual street fair on Saturday, May 17.
The fair will run from Miles Avenue to LaSalle Avenue – what the merchants call the “prime commercial district” – with four transportation shuttles provided by DJ Ambulette that will cruise up and down the commercial corridor to offer free rides up and down the strip.
The annual event brings the community and the merchants closer together, said TNMA president Steve Kaufman.
“The community comes out and they stroll along and look at the displays, the rides, and different offerings that day,” said Kaufman. “There will be a large turnout, as there was last year. We encourage the merchants to participate.”
Offerings will include arts & crafts, face-painting, a bounce castle, and a rock-climbing wall provided by the NYPD, according to the TNMA.
There will also be a bandstand with live performances at Derosa O’Boyle Triangle across from the Throgs Neck Library, said volunteer coordinator Gerri Colon, who is working with fellow volunteer Patrick Caruso to make this year’s event an even bigger success that it has been for the past five years.
There should be offerings from the Bronx Zoo and the New York Botanical Gardens; the NYPD will be on hand to provide child and cell phone protection; and there will even be the opportunity to adopt a dog at the event, according to the TNMA.
For the merchants themselves, it gives them a chance to put displays out on the street to show the public what they have to offer, said Kaufman.
“I am there all day helping to promote it,” he said. “I enjoy that people are coming out to participate and that they are having a good time, and it is good to see the merchants interact with the people. I think it is wonderful.”
“It is an event the tries to pull the whole community together,” said Colon, adding “it will be a nice day to walk up and down E. Tremont to see which stores are participating.”
