Rape suspect sought for gunpoint sexual assault in Waterbury-LaSalle

Police are searching for a suspect who they believe raped a 24-year-old woman at gunpoint.

The New York City Police Department is asking for the public assistance in identifying a man who allegedly approached the victim near East Tremont Avenue and Meyers Street and then sexually assaulted her.

The assault occurred at around 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 20. The suspect was last seen wearing white medical scrubs and red sneakers, according to the NYPD.

The Special Victims Unit is handling the case, The suspect is a male black, a NYPD source said.

There is surveillance camera footage of the suspect that police have released.

A local leader in the Waterbury-LaSalle community, where the assault occurred, expressed her dismay.

“This is definitely outrageous and it calls attention to the fact that we need more police on the street,” said Mary Jane Musano, board member at the Waterbury-LaSalle Community Association. “This is very scary.”
