Here’s a good read — and good news for young readers in one of the Bronx’s least literate areas. United Way of New York City and UnitedHealthcare teamed up to open a new “reading corner” at the East Side House Settlement in Mott Haven. Collaborating with publishing company Scholastic, the center provides a space where families can read together, and get information about healthy reading habits. The boost is much-needed in a neighborhood where only 1 in 10 kids read on grade level by the third grade. Children who do not read at grade level by then are 70% more likely to drop out of high school, according to United Way stats.
