Another Bronx high school sports season is getting set to start. As students ready to return to the classroom Bronx Times Sports Editor Joseph Staszewski give you a look at the stars to watch for the upcoming 2014 fall season.
Alex Cannicotti, Fordham Prep boys’soccer
Much more responsibility will be placed on Cannicotti this season with a large group of seniors lost to gradation, including last year’s Bronx Times All-Bronx Player of the Year Richard Moessner. The junior midfielder more than held his own last season with 15 goals, including a winner against Christ the King. He will need to be the driving force if Fordham makes a run at a city title.
Kayla Dupree, Bronx Science girl’s volleyball
The now senior stepped up for the Wolverines in a big way last season and gave Bronx Science a viable middle hitter to go along with plenty of upperclassman. With plenty of stars lost to graduation, more responsibility will fall on Dupree. She will need to improve on her
Gianna Finz, Bronx Science girls’ soccer
Finz hit the ground running after losing a season to a torn ACL. She went on to score 25 goals and lead Bronx Science back to the PSAL Class A final. The senior forward exudes a toughness and determination to go along with her skills that makes her one of the city’s special players. Finz will try to lead a talented Wolverines team to another city title.
Gillian Gore, Fieldston girls’ volleyball
The arrival of Gore made all the difference for the Eagles last season. As a freshman she stepped into the role as the Fieldston’s star player as dominated on the court. The outside hitter helped lead the Eagles to an Ivy League title and trip to the NYSAISAA state title game. There will be no sneaking up on anything this year. She and the Eagles are the hunted.
Amaris Hemmings, Riverdale girl’s soccer
Hemmings proved to a special player from the minutes she was called up as a freshman. The current senior is now one of the fastest and most dynamic players in city. Hemming, a forward, scored 12 goals and eight assists and tallied the winner in the NYSAISAA semifinals a year ago. Her goal is to return the Falcons to hoisting a state title.
Timothy Poindexter, Cardinal Hayes Football
The reigning Bronx Times All-Bronx player of the year ran for 1,372 yards and 17 touchdowns to help lead the Cardinals to their first CHSFL Class AA title since 1981. Poindexter has scholarship offer from Rutgers, Fordham, Ohio, Old Dominion, and Toledo. He gets to prove himself again Class AA team likes for St. Anthony’s and Chaminde in 20014.
Anton Porter, Mount St. Michael
The Mount had a bit of a down year last season, but the didn’t stop Porter from showing off his immense talents. There isn’t anything the athletic senior forward can’t do on soccer field. His speed and size make him a tough mark for opposing defenses and he has the ability to score from anywhere. With a little help, Porter could have Mount back on top of CHSAA Class A division.
Brandon Harris, DeWitt Clinton Football
Harris announced himself as one of the city’s rising starts during his sophomore season. He got the Governors off to a 4-0 start and a 5-4 record while compiling 1,881 total yards and 27 touchdowns. Harris should be even better with a year of playing time and experience under his belt and that should mean bad things for PSAL defenses.
