The Throggs Neck Benevolent Association will hold its 19th annual Turkey Trot 5 kilometer walk and run in honor of deceased Bronxite Geraldine Crowley-Crorkin at Orchard Beach on Saturday, November 22.

You can still sign up and make a donation to take part in the race, which starts at 11 a.m. and covers the beach’s promenade and running path. Registration is at 10 a.m. near the beach food court.

The annual celebration and fund-raiser for the benevolent association is in honor of Crowley-Crorkin, a prominent young mother who was diagnosed with cancer while pregnant with her son, and who passed away after giving birth, said TNBA vice president Chris Dalton.

“This was a way of honoring her and her memory,” he said. “She meant an awful lot to a lot of people in the neighborhood, and it is just a good thing to do. Her family shows up every year and are participants, along with their extended family members and friends.”

The race is for fun and to bring the people together, he added.

“It is just a really nice time,” said Dalton. “Groups of people get together, and they run, walk and walk with baby carriages.”

Trophies are also awarded to the most serious runners and to the youngest person to participate in the 5K, he said, adding it is an important event for the local Throggs Neck community.

“It is important for many people in the community who don’t get to see each other year to year, but who meet up at the race and after party,” said Dalton, adding that it is a great time for people to come and reminisce with friends about Crowley-Crorkin.

The post-race party takes place this year at Brewski’s at 3718 E. Tremont Avenue.

Donations are $30 if you register by mail postmarked by Thursday, November 13, and $35 if you register the day of the race. That fee includes a t-shirt, and the party.

The proceeds are used to help people and families in need around Throggs Neck.

“The money raised goes into a fund, which is distributed to those in need,” said Dalton. “It goes to people who have catastrophic illness, or have had an accident”
