Remembering a friend

The late Sid Bulkin, an important musician during the big-band era who was born in the Bronx in 1924, is being remembered by Herb Stark, who wrote a few words about the musician.

Stark wrote : I along with his many fans pay tribute to Sid Bulkin who, through his warm, witty, outgoing personality deserves plaudits and accolades for his accomplishments in jazz and pop music.

According to the information provided by Stark, Belkin served in the military during World War II.

Stark writes that he began his musical career with the Ralph Flanagan Orchestra where he helped further the careers of newcomer Peggy King and veteran vocalist Harry Prime.

He was known to his peers as ‘Broadway Sid’ and worked with such music luminaries as Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra, Don Elliott, Terry Gibbs, Maynard Ferguson Eddie Fisher, Ella Fitzgerald, Vic Damone, and Dizzy Gillespie, and on a television show with Johnny Carson. He also performed with Billy Eckstine’s all black band during the 1950s, contributing to crossing the color line.

Tribute Band

The following was brought to the paper by D.J. Bobby Flowers:

Originally from the Bronx, these three entertainers are taking the metro area by storm. Anthony Farino (as a Frank Sinatra tribute artist), Bobby Flowers (premier deejay) and the man who goes by one name, Vittorio (as a Tom Jones tribute artist). Farino is known as Mr. Smooth and Vittorio as Mr. Electric. That’s what they bring to every show. Sold out establishments are now the norm.
