2015 All-Bronx Girls Basketball Honors

Cardinal Spellman won the borough’s only post season title, but Bronx teams remained some of the best across the five boroughs.

The veteran Pilots won their second straight CHSAA Archdiocesan title before falling for the second consecutive season in the Catholic Class A semifinals. Monsignor Scanlan had it best campaign in recent years by winning an undefeated Bronx/Westchester division crown. Truman shook off a rough start to finish the year strong in the PSAL ‘AA’ league. No. 12-seeded Evander Child saw its Cinderella playoff run ended in the PSAL Class A title game. Horace Mann and Fieldston remained among the top team in the Ivy League.

Here are the players who added to another special year of girls’ basketball in the Bronx and were deemed the best in the borough.

Player of the Year:

Jade Vega,

Cardinal Spellman

Vega secured her name among the great guards to play at Spellman. The senior, who is still weighing her college options, was the Pilots leading scorer and surest ball handler. Jade wasn’t afraid to take the big shot, mix it up in the paint and sacrifice her body if need be to win. She scored 32 points to lead Spellman to the diocesan title over St. Joseph by-the-Sea.

Coach of the Year:

James Braswell,

Evander Childs

Braswell and Evander Child have been knocking on the door in recent years of being one of the elite programs in the PSAL Class A league. It finished second in its own division this year, but surged in the post-season. Braswell got the most of his balanced club as the No. 12 seed handedly upset defending champions Martin Luther King Jr. in the semis before losing to MSIT in the title game.

All-Bronx First Team

G Lisa Fields,

Harry Truman

The senior was the Mustangs unquestioned leader. Her speed and smarts with the ball in her hand make a tough matchup for anyone. Fields averaged 13 points, seven rebound and seven assists in league play this season.

G Aneisha Lyons,

Harry Truman

Lyons built off a stellar sophomore season and established herself as one of the city’s most exciting players. She averaged 15.8 points and 8.3 rebounds per contest. The best is still to come for Lyons, who dropped in 19 points against rival Murry Bergtraum.

F Nukiya Mayo,

Monsignor Scanlan

Learning the game from her freshman year on has been an uphill climb for Mayo. Everything came together for her junior season. She posted 13.5 points and 12.6 rebounds per contest as her confidence continues to grow.

F Niajah Morgan,

Cardinal Spellman

Morgan is one of those special players who can affect a game in so many different ways. She can score inside and out, shutdown the other team’s best player and helped the diocesan champions control the backboards.

G Delphynia Sparks,

Monsignor Scanlan

This was the coming out year for splendid sophomore guard. Sparks was often the best player on the floor and backed it up with her play. She averaged 18.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and four assists a game to help Scanlan to a division title.

All-Bronx Second Team

F Dyona Davis

Truman

It was major coming out party for the Truman freshman. Davis averaged 12. 5 points and 3.8 rebounds a contest during the regular season. She finished the year with consecutive 20-point games.

G Madeline Giannini,

Preston

The three-sport standout turned in another stellar hoops campaign. The senior was the team’s second leading scorer and a strong rebounder. She made everything else go with her skilled and energetic play at point guard.

G Destini Green,

DeWitt Clinton

The senior guard was one of the top players in the PSAL Class A division. Green averaged an astounding 24.4 points, 15.3 rebounds and 9.3 assists during the regular season.

F Kameron Stone,

Cardinal Spellman

Stone was a versatile piece for the Pilots. The senior provided a steady inside presence that got better and better as the year went on. She was the perfect complement to Spellman’s guards.

G Jordan Nixon,

Horace Mann

Nixon is a name you will be hearing plenty of in the years to come. The freshman is one of the city’s best young guards. Her fearless play put Horace Mann in the running for an Ivy League crown.
