2015 All-Bronx Boys Basketball Honors

The Bronx was the king of New York City thanks to a historic season by Wings Academy.

The Wings won their first PSAL Class AA title in the first championship game without a Brooklyn school since 2005. Coach Billy Turnage’s club did one better after that by rallying to end Christ the King’s two-year reign on top of the state in the Federation final.

Monsignor Scanlan didn’t bring home a title, but fought its way to the CHSAA Class A final after seeing a number of it highly-recruited players transfer before the season. St. Raymond and Cardinal Hayes remained among the top ‘AA’ teams in New York City, while Fordham Prep emerged a real threat in the ‘A’. Eagle and Kennedy continues to be among the top PSAL teams in the borough.

Here are the players deemed to be the Bronx’s best for the 2014-15 season:

Basketball Player of the Year:

Jessie Govan

Wings Academy

Govan was the difference between Wings and the rest of the teams in New York State. The 6-foot-10 Georgetown commit gave his team a dominant presence on both ends of the floor. He helped Wings to its first ever PSAL and state Federation Class AA crowns. Govan average 23 points and 13 rebounds per game. He tallied 29 points and 13 boards in the city semifinals against Jefferson and fought back tears after scoring the final five points against Dozo to seal the crown.

Billy Turnage

Wings Academy

Years of frustration came to a major end for Turnage, who is in his ninth season at Wings. He finally won the elusive PSAL ‘AA’ city title after five semifinal defeats and knocked off two-time defending champions Christ the King for the state Federation crown. Turnage masterfully used all the weapons in his arsenal. He let his stars carry Wings like that should, got the most out of his role players and continually fueled his team’s determination win.

G Clive Allen

Cardinal Hayes

Allen’s heart, passion and pride rubbed off on all his teammates. The junior’s inspired play on both ends of the floor brought out the best in his inexperienced team and made Hayes one of the city’s most dangerous clubs. Allen averaged 18.1 points per game and tallied a high of 39 points this season.

G Desure Buie

Wings Academy

The Hofstra-bound guard put on one of the best playoff performances in recent years when he dropped in 42 points, including nine 3-pointers to beat Construction in the semifinals. Buie was the guiding force all season for Wings as its floor general and clutch shooter. Her averaged 18.5 points, four rebounds and seven assists per game.

G Randy Coporan

Wings Academy

Coporan, hit big shots in the post season, was Wings’ heart and soul and one of the city’s toughest defenders. Opponents’ top players never had an easy night with Corporan on them and neither did his teammate if the weren’t playing up to par. The senior’s impassioned speech turned around the state final against Christ the King.

F Jeff Hayden, Sr.

Cardinal Hayes

The senior was the epitome of a blue-collar player. He used every inch of his 6-foot-3 frame to be one of the city’s most effective inside scorers, rebounders and defenders in the city. Hayden averaged 18.1 points per game and was a double-double threat in any contest he played.

F Sidney Wilson

St. Raymond

The super sophomore lived up to all the hype. There were some expected growing pains, but Wilson proved he is one of the area’s most dynamic players. He can jump out of the gym block shots and knock down the three. Wilson averaged 14.7 points per game and led the Ravens to the CHSAA Archdiocesan final.

Second Team

F Cahiem Brown

St. Raymond

The junior did a little bit of everything for the Ravens. Brown got the job done if they needed points, key rebounds or a big defensive stop. He averaged 17.8 points per game for a young St. Ray’s squad.

G George Pena

Monsignor Scanlan

Pena continued to be one of the borough’s most explosive players. His fearless nature gets the most out of his 5-foot-9 frame. The junior averaged 17.4 points per contest and led the Crusaders to the CHSAA Class A final.

G Maquis Duboise

Eagle Academy

The sophomore point guard was a force to be reckoned with for Eagles. He epitomized being a floor general by averaging 11.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 7.5 assists during the regular season and helps his team place second in its division.

G Nukoy Singleton

Mount St. Michael

Mount was one of the more dangerous team in the CHSAA and lot of it had to do with Singlton. The senior guard averaged 16.5 points per game and is a 1,000 points scorer for his career thanks to his excellent handle and superb shot.

G Darryl Williams

Kennedy

The Knights weren’t going to beat you with size, but like Williams they could shoot the lights out on any given night. The senior averaged 16.1 points per game and made 55 3-pointers. He shot Kennedy to the PSAL Bronx borough final.
