John Joseph Wynne
John attended Our Lady of Solace Church and School. The Sisters at Our Lady of Solace profoundly affected John and he remained a devout Catholic his entire life. He often spoke of his time at grade school and consistently made donations to the sisters right up to the end of his life. When he could no longer see, he asked his sons to write checks to take care of the sisters because the took care of him.
After high school, he joined the army along with his future brother-in-laws, Ben Nolan and Buddy Sparks; they all served their country bravely during World War II.
John saw action in the European and North African campaigns leaving an impressive photo documentation of the battles, including the invasion at Anzio Beach.
After victory, John , Ben and Buddy came back to the Bronx, married and started families. John took a job with the Post Office, but soon left to join the U.S. Customs Service, a job he would keep his entire career. He loved the daily adventure of the Port of New York and could not wait to go there every day. He is one of the few to have had a career he truly loved. It served him and his family well and he retired as a supervisor. He was a role model featured in the Customs recruitment brochures and other promotional material.
John took his young family from the Bronx to Whitestone, Queens ,where he and his wife Eleanor raised their two sons, Richard and John.
When he retired after 42 years of service with the federal government, they moved to Margate, Florida where he lived until he returned ‘home’ today.
He is survived by Eleanor, his two sons, six grandchildren and two grandchildren.
Spring Show at P.S.71
The Theater Arts Director at P.S/M.S. 71,
Personally, as the director of the Theater Arts program for just under two years, I am proud of how it is developing. Last year, we launched the program with our first production of ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’. Next year, the program has plans to produce a Fall and Spring production. The mission of the Drama Club is to present younger audiences with classical works of literature and Theatre, enabling the students to connect with and appreciate stories that may not often find their way into the classroom.
