The largest Bronx municipal hospital will be saying ‘goodbye’ to its top honcho after a decade of service.
Bill Walsh, the executive director of Jacobi Medical Center, will retire from the hospital after being appointed to the position in 2005.
Walsh, who will leave Jacobi in mid-September, also spent the last ten years as senior vice president of the North Bronx Healthcare Network and executive director of North Central Bronx Hospital.
During his tenure, he oversaw the construction of Jacobi’s Ambulatory Care Facility. The state-of-the-art center was outfitted with every amenity for cutting edge critical care.
In total, Walsh has over 30 years of experience serving the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation. He previously worked at Coney Island Hospital.
Following his departure from the Morris Park hospital, Walsh will serve as the senior vice president for hospital operations and managing director of the University Hospital of Brooklyn, part of SUNY Downstate Medical Center, which includes the College of Medicine, Colleges of Nursing and Health Related Professions, Schools of Graduate Studies and Public Health.
“Walsh has been an inspirational leader and a tireless champion for patient safety and quality patient-centered care,” said Antonio Martin, chief operating officer and executive vice president of HHC. “Under his leadership, Jacobi and North Central have initiated numerous patient safety and clinical effectiveness initiatives resulting in reduced mortality, improved patient outcomes, safety and satisfaction.”
“He is highly revered by his colleagues as well as the hospitals’ community advisory boards, and we wish him the best in his new position,” said Martin.
According to a Jacobi spokesperson, a national search will be undertaken to identify Walsh’s replacement at the 470-bed hospital, as a result of his departure.
In the interim, Chris Fugazy will serve as acting executive director of the hospital, where he currently serves as chief operating officer.
Gregory Calliste will serve as acting executive director of North Central Bronx Hospital, where he also currently serves as chief operating officer.
“I didn’t know him personally, but I do know that he was a great leader,” said Frank Vignali, a Pelham Parkway resident. “He was very well-liked and did his absolute best to assist and support the community during his career at Jacobi.”
Joseph Orlando was Walsh’s predecessor.
