Fordham continues to roll and it has hit a historic level.
The Rams women’s basketball team beat VCU 60-51 for its fifth straight victory at Rose Hill last Sunday afternoon. Fordham improved to a perfect 5-0 in Atlantic 10 play, marking the best start in program history on the league. The defending conference champion Rams are tied with George Washington for first place in the division
Samantha Clark led Fordham with 18 points and nine rebounds. Hannah Missry tallied 17 points and connected on five 3-pointers. Ashley Pegram paced VCU with 16 points and five boards,
Clark was the catalysis of a big first half for Fordham (13-5, 5-0), dropping in 13 of her points in the opening stanza, It outscored VCU 27-18 going into the break. Fordham took its largest lead of the game at 42-26 on Taryn Durant’s jumper in the paint midway through the second half.
VCU (12-6, 3-2) used an 11-1 run to get back in the game and close the gap to 43-37. Missry took it from there. She connected on 3-pointers around a Danielle Burns steal and layup to help give Fordham a 51-37 advantage with 5:28 to go it he game. She and her team never looked back.
Manhattan falls to Rider in overtime: The Jaspers saw its four-game winning streak halted by an 82-79 home defeat at the hands of visiting Rider last Sunday afternoon.
Emmy Andujar and Shane Richards each scored 21 points and Ashton Pankey added 18 points and nine rebounds. Khalil Alford’s layup with put Rider up 80-77 with 31 seconds left in overtime. Andujar hit two free throws and had a chance to take the lead after Rider missed the front end of a one and one with 12 ticks remaining. The Jaspers (8-9, 5-3) turned it over the next possession, ending and hope of a victory.
Four lead changes and three ties highlighted the final five minutes of regulation. Both teams misfired on potential game-winners in the last minute. Teddy Okereafor paced five double-figure scorers for Rider (12-7, 6-2) with 16 points, seven assists and six steals.
Bronx-native Hooper gives St. Francis College thrilling win: Chris Hooper was falling down along the baseline as he let the ball goal with the buzzer sounded.The St. Francis Brooklyn junior forward’s last gasp attempt found nothing but net to give the Terriers men’s basketball a 60-59 victory over host St. Francis University in Northeast Conference men’s basketball last Sunday afternoon.
The final play started with St. Francis Brooklyn down 59-58 with seven seconds remaining. Brett Jones dribbled the length of the floor and put up a floater along the right ride. Hooper tipped the weak side rebound to himself amid Red Flash defenders before getting a shot up in the nick of time. The basket was initially waved off before being overturned by video review.
‘I was just doing my job,” said Hooper, who had 11 points and six rebounds. “I knew that the play was for Brent to drive to the basket and I needed to be in position to follow-up the shot. I had a good feeling that I got it off in time and luckily I timed it right.”
