A damaged highway overpass barrier in the Bronx will soon be fixed.
According to a New York State Department of Transportation spokesperson, the wall located at the intersection of East Tremont Avenue and Bruckner Boulevard, over the Bruckner Expressway, is expected to be repaired within the next few months after a horrific car accident took place at the site nearly a year and a half ago.
The steel bridge rail on the southeast portion of the overpass was damaged in late June of 2014, when a 26-year-old male, driving a 2012 Chevy Cruze at about 10:50 p.m. eastbound on the Bruckner service road broke through the barrier, plunging 23 feet onto the Bruckner Expressway, according to the NYPD.
He was removed to Jacobi Medical Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
A temporary fence was immediately installed by NYSDOT to seal off the opening. A concrete barrier was also installed at the site.
A roadside memorial, that included candles and photos, was set up by the deceased’s family and friends.
A NYSDOT spokesperson stated that the new bridge rail is expected in approximately three weeks.
The agency also noted that the installation is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
“We would have liked to have seen this repaired a lot sooner, but it’s good that this situation is finally being handled,” said a Community Board 10 spokesperson.
