Firefighters prevented a fast moving fire in Mott Haven from becoming much worse last Sunday. According to the FDNY, approximately 138 firefighters responded to a three-alarm fire at the Tuck-It-Away Self-Storage facility at 601 E. 137th Street on Sunday, April 9 at 12:30 a.m. Some firefighters were sent initially to combat the inferno from the interior, however it was deemed far too dangerous. Firefighters fought endlessly from the outside to extinguish the fire which burned over 12 hours inside the storage units while attempting to safeguard a nearby BP gas station. Two firefighters sustained minor injuries and were taken to Jacobi Medical Center for treatment. The fire chief noted the side of the warehouse collapsed from the fire. Officials believe the fire originated on either the second or third floor of the 6-story building. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
