Bronx River Sounds Performing Arts Festival

This Friday the 21st annual Bronx River Sounds Performing Arts Festival kicks off its month-long celebration of New York City’s talented Latin and African American musicians, vocalists, composers and producers. Hosted at the Bronx River Art Center, the festival will spotlight the musical savvy of one artist every Friday and Saturday night in June. Brooklyn-based Latin artist and recently NPR Tiny Desk Concert alum Yasser Tejeda will take the stage first.

Doors will open for a cocktail hour at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday, June 8

The Bronx Book Festival: Festival Day

8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Digital and pop-up bookstore The Bronx Is Reading will be hosting their seventh annual Bronx Book Festival this Saturday. The full-day event, which will take place at Fordham Plaza, will feature three sets of programming on three separate event stages: a main stage, a young adult and middle grade literature stage and a young readers stage. Notable guests like Pulitzer Prize-winning author Colson Whitehead, New York Times bestselling author Chloe Gong, New York Times bestselling author Renée Watson and more award-winning writers will discuss their literary journeys in panel discussions and keynote speeches. Additionally, panel discussions will cover professional opportunities in book publishing, “bookfluencing” and what it means to write for social justice.

The event will also include readings and signings of upcoming books from authors Vashti Harrison, Dr. Michael Datcher, Renée Watson and more.

BronxRockets Community Run/Walk 

9 to 11:30 a.m. 

Free

Community run/walk group BronxRockets will be hosting a Bronx collective run/walk for all levels of cardio eager community members from beginners to cardio devotees. Join fellow Bronx socializers for an easy walk, a brisk run,or anything in between through the beautiful Bronx Parks and neighborhoods. 

For those wanting to get active with BronxRockets, wear comfortable shoes, preferably tennis shoes. The walk or run will begin at Rev. T. Wendell Foster Park between River and Jerome Avenue

Morrisania Band Project at 2024 Soul Odyssey

This Sunday, soul cover band and collective Morrisania Band Project will present “2024 Soul Odyssey,” the band’s celebration of soul sounds. Join Morrisania Band Project and their celebration of Black Music Month at The Starving Artist for an afternoon of live music, snacks, beverages and a soulful community vibe.

Pop-Up Park Picnic 

1 to 5 p.m.

Enjoy a self-guided pop-up picnic for couples at Claremont Park. Access date activities inspired by the five love languages through the Digital Date Nite Box, included upon registration. Couples can create custom couple e-coupons, a digital love jar and vision board and play couple games virtually at their own pace all while sunset-watching.
