Celebrate Halloween: 10 things to do in October in the Bronx

With Halloween just around the corner, the following is a list of events and activities throughout the Bronx for those interested in celebrating the creatively themed holiday. 

Boo at the Zoo!

Place: The Bronx Zoo, 2300 Southern Blvd

Date: Every Saturday and Sunday in October

Spooky fun for the family! Gather the family to celebrate Halloween at The Bronx Zoo with various activities for the kids throughout the month. Children can dress up in their Halloween best and trick or treat down a candy trail or show off their costumes in the costume parade. Other daytime activities include Halloween arts and crafts, magic shows, pumpkin carving demonstrations, exploring the extinct animal graveyard and much more. The zoo also offers nighttime activities such as Dinos in the Darkness and a Spooktacular Night Walk.

Fall-O-Ween 

Place: New York Botanical Garden, 2900 Southern Blvd.

Date: Oct. 1-Oct. 30 

Nature lovers of all ages get the chance to explore the various fall-themed activities featured at the New York Botanical Garden this month. Carve pumpkins with master carvers, dress up the kids and walk in the pumpkin parade or take a stroll through the adventure garden and greet some scarecrows along the way. While you visit, don’t forget to check out the beautiful Kiku, in-bloom during the month of October.

Halloween Matinee 

Place: Woodstock Library, 761 E. 160th St.

Date: Every Saturday in October, 1 p.m.-3 p.m.

Movie lovers beware! Teens have the chance to watch classic horror movies such as “Young Frankenstein” (1976), “The Masque of the Red Death” (1964) and “The Ring” (2002) every Saturday at the Woodstock Library. Don’t worry about bringing popcorn, snacks are provided.

Spooky Movie Day & Craft

Place: Sedgwick Library 1701 Dr. MLK. Jr Blvd.

Date: Every Wednesday in October, 3:30 p.m.-5 p.m. 

Families with kids of all ages are welcome to come down to the Sedgwick library and celebrate the Halloween season with spooky movies and crafts. During your visit, check out the Staff Picks for Fall 2022 for a book to take home.

Movies Under The Stars: Goosebumps 

Place: Track & Field in Kwame Ture Recreation Center, 1527 Jesup Ave.

Date: Friday, Oct. 14, 7 p.m.-10 p.m.

Outdoor movies are back for the fall season. Grab a blanket to lay out and watch “Goosebumps” under the stars. Based on the popular book series by R.L Stine, “Goosebumps” follows a teenager who teams up with the horror author’s daughter in order to fight the writer’s imaginary demons that have been set free. This film is sure to have the whole family looking over their shoulders.

Halloween Costume Dog Show 

Place: Game Room in Williamsbridge Oval Recreation Center, 3225 Reservoir Oval E.

Date: Friday, Oct. 14, 5:30 p.m.- 7:30 p.m.

Furry friends can join in the fall fun at the Halloween Costume Dog Show. Pets can show off their Halloween spirit in costume for a pet fashion show where you can walk them down the runway, maneuver through an obstacle course and take fun photos.

Bronx Halloween Parade 

Place: Simpson Street and Westchester Avenue

Date: Saturday, Oct. 22, 12 p.m. 

The Bronx Community Board 2 is back with the 37th Annual Bronx Halloween Parade. Gather the family to come and watch this Mardi Gras-themed parade. Kicking off at Southern Boulevard and Westchester Avenue, the parade is set to travel down Southern Boulevard, taking a turn onto Intervale Avenue and ending at Dawson Street. The party doesn’t end there, make sure to stay and catch the post-parade showcase at Bill Rainey Park (at Dawson Street and Rogers Place).

F4P Halloween Extravaganza 2022

Place: Franz Sigel Park, East 158th St.

Date: Saturday, Oct. 29, 1 p.m.-5 p.m. 

The Friends of 4 Parks Alliance is here to present the F4P Halloween Extravaganza 2022. This spooky celebration has something for all ages, from tricks, treats and slime-making to tarot readings, an interactive story walk with Emit theatre and a costume parade for people and pets.

Trick or Treat Trek

Place: Bartow-Pell Mansion, 895 Shore Road

Date: Saturday, Oct. 29, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

The Bartow-Pell Mansion is welcoming guests of all ages to come and trick or treat. Visitors are encouraged to dress up in costume and roam the grounds, rain or shine, as they search for treats and maybe meet some of the strange inhabitants of the mansion along the way.

On Point Haunted House

Place: Hunts Point Recreation Center 765 Manida St.

Date: Monday, Oct. 31, 5 p.m.-9 p.m.

Haunt Hunts Point at the On Point Haunted House. Bring the Kids and partake in various games, a dance contest and Halloween crafts. Think you’re brave? See if you have what it takes to make it through their haunted house.
