Cardinal Spellman High School dedicated its baseball field to the memory of former coach Frederick W. ‘Fritz’ Calaicone who passed away last year at age 81. Bronx-bred, Calaicone played in the minor leagues for the New York Yankees and the Chicago Cubs, served as a firefighter from 1964 to 1984 and later became the fire commissioner for the Greenburgh Fire Department, before coaching baseball and football at Spellman from 1968 to 1980.
