Business is thriving in the Bronx because of the community members with unique ideas for small businesses that, once they open, become an essential part of the borough. Wendy Clark is one of these people; Clark recently opened The Pearl, a movement studio on City Island. The business offers classes in pilates, yoga, meditation, dance and even pre- and post-natal movement.

What sets The Pearl apart from other movement studios in the Bronx is that they offer reformer pilates, which is not offered anywhere else in the borough. It involves a machine that may seem intimidating, but reformer pilates can be extremely beneficial, particularly for those with injuries and back pain. It can also be great for core strength, flexibility and more.

It can be challenging to open a niche business, even in a place like City Island, where many of the storefronts on their main street are not in use. Clark said it was difficult to find a landlord who would be willing to rent a space to her, but eventually she was able to move into 319 City Island Ave.

Clark says she has a lot of “regulars” already. It’s a novelty to go to a place like The Pearl— it’s like going to the movies or buying a cup of coffee. You could exercise at home, but it’s a treat to go someplace like The Pearl and use their machines.

Her success so far landed her a spot in the 1010 WINS Small Business Challenge with Dime Bank, which presented to her the opportunity to network and boost her business’ position as a Bronx community member.

She’s already taking part in a community event: the Borough President’s Bronx Fireworks Extravaganza on Thursday, June 27. The Pearl will be offering a free class as an introduction to the studio’s classes at 5:30 before the program starts at 6:00.
