Expanding on its continuing commitment to improving patient safety, NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi North Central Bronx announced  that over 250 patients have been treated during childbirth using the Triton platform since October 2023.

Triton is a qualitative hemorrhage protocol that uses technology to help measure cumulative blood loss during the labor process. This monitoring device helps physicians make evidence-based decisions to protect both mothers and babies during the childbirth process and help to combat potential incidents of maternal mortality.

The Triton platform and similar technologies are needed advancements in patient safety as The American Medical Association estimates nearly 70% of pregnancy-related deaths from hemorrhaging are preventable. Thus, Triton helps to provide an objective, qualitative blood assessment that help reduce blood loss and save lives.

Triton works by scanning surgical sponges, suction canisters and pads used during the birthing process to provide a superior, real-time and accurate blood loss assessment of the patient. From this assessment, the platform can help activate hemorrhage protocols. The result has been, according to Triton, a 332% increase in detection of hemorrhages in facilities using the platform.

“As care providers, our goal is to provide a safe environment for all of our patients, particularly during the childbirth process,” said Kandis Mclean, a family nurse practitioner at NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi North Central Bronx.  “This new technology helps us reduce the risk of hemorrhaging and potential maternal mortality.”

One such patient who was treated with this platform was Ayomide Olatunde, a Wakefield resident who gave birth in December to her son, Lotunna. During the delivery, providers used the Triton platform to ensure every precaution was taken to make the childbirth process a safe one for both the new mother and her child.

“Everyone at North Central Bronx was so supportive and kind, from the doctors and nurses to the support staff,” said Olatunde. “I didn’t even realize the additional level of safety until I was told about it after the delivery.”

Mclean advises that the Triton platform is now a standard level of care for all delivery patients.
