On Friday, June 2, NYC Parks Bronx Borough Commissioner Jessy Aponte joined New York City Councilmember Pierina Sanchez to celebrate the installation of brand-new backboards at the Fordham Landing basketball courts. The backboard installation was made possible by $13,150 in funding from Sanchez. Parks installed the backboards on a total of five courts — four full-sized courts and one junior court — enhancing the courts for generations of Bronxites to come.

Parks acquired the Fordham Landing Playground site on Dec. 12, 1950, in conjunction with the construction of the Major Deegan Expressway. The park is one of six parks, ranging in area from about one-tenth of an acre to about four acres, that border the Major Deegan Expressway. The popular ballfield at Fordham Landing Playground was renovated in 1997 under a $473,000 capital project funded by Councilmember Israel Ruiz Jr.
