SBLA_header

Welcome to South Bronx Literacy Academy!

A new Public School for struggling readers. We embrace differences to unleash potential.

  • Small class size with 18 students and 2 teachers in every class.
  • Highly trained teachers specializing in evidence-based reading practices.
  • Intensive & comprehensive phonics-based structured literacy instruction. Three dedicated literacy blocks per day, based on the latest research.
  • Aligned support in math, science and social studies.
  • Social-emotional and organizational skills to build capable and independent learners.
  • Enrichment classes including Mindfulness, Gym, Art and more.

Founded by a group of parents with struggling readers and opening this Fall with 2nd and 3rd grade classes, SBLA will serve as the NYCDOE’s first district school explicitly designed to serve students with dyslexia and children who face significant challenges in reading. Dyslexia is a learning difference that involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words. SBLA will aim to unlock the potential of students struggling to read by bringing culturally relevant, structured literacy to the classroom through evidence-based, direct, and explicit instruction.

SBLA’s application inquiry for the 2023-2024 school year is now available for this new school. The school will open in fall 2023 in District 7, in the South Bronx starting with two 2nd and two 3rd-grade sections.
