To the Editor,

There is good news from Washington that could benefit Metropolitan Transportation Authority Metro-North Railroad and New York City Transit subway riders. On Oct. 12, the Federal Transit Administration announced a Notice of Funding Opportunity to apply for $600 million in Fiscal Year 2022 and 2023 Section 5337 State of Good Repair Grants Program funds for competitively selected rail vehicle replacement projects.

The purpose of the program is to modernize America’s transit system, with emphasis on maintaining a State of Good Repair for fixed guideway rail transit. Eligible projects include the replacement of subway, commuter rail and light rail vehicles that have exceeded their useful life.

You have to be in it to win it. Deadline to submit grant applications is Jan. 5, 2023. The MTA should prioritize this and apply for these funds ASAP.
