Mary Colby is opening her studio for a celebration of 30 years on City Island in the Bronx. Colby has been privately selling her artwork from her studio to decorators and private homes for decades. It is unusual to find an artist’s studio on a main street where you can come in and see the work in process.
The opening reception is on Saturday, April 22 at 276 City Island Ave., from 6-9 p.m. The show will run through May 21.
Recent works on paper and canvas, plus some earlier work will be on exhibit.
From an early age Colby watched her mother copy paintings by Goya, Rembrandt and Caravaggio in their kitchen. Colby studied at Lehman College and The Art Students League in NYC. She has been painting in her storefront workshop since 1993 to the delight of the City Island denizens and visitors from the tri-state area who pass by and watch her create. Her work has been in many group shows but as a studio/gallery owner she has been able to show and sell artwork directly to the people who come to love her art.
