The following is an analysis of crime statistics in Bronx NYPD precincts comparing data from the Jan. 1, 2022 – Sept. 6, 2022 period with data from the Jan. 1, 2023 – Sept. 6, 2023 period. The statistics are provided through the NYPD’s CompStat data center, which tracks crimes across all five boroughs.

Grand larceny auto continues to be on the rise in every single Bronx NYPD precinct over the last week compared to 2022. That increase is largest in the 45th Precinct, where there has been a reported 85.3% increase from 197 incidents during the aforementioned period in 2022 to 365 completed to the same timeframe this year. The 45th Precinct is located at 2877 Barkley Ave. in the East Bronx neighborhood of Throggs Neck, and encompasses 6 miles of park area and 10.6 miles of waterfront — as well Co-Op City and City Island.

The Bronx has seen a few high profile grand larceny auto cases in the past few years — one of the most recent last month when New York State Attorney General Letitia James sentenced six Bronx men for stealing more than $3 million in cash, cars and merchandise in 11 different counties, including Bronx County. The investigation stated that the six men had stolen at least 54 cars that the Attorney General’s office was aware of. Additionally in 2021, the NYPD arrested nine Bronxites for their alleged role in an auto theft ring after a two-year investigation.

Murders are only up in four of the 12 Bronx precincts: the 41st, 42nd, 43rd and 50th. The biggest jump over last year is in the 41st, where murders have doubled from three in 2022 to six this year. The 42nd, 43rd and 50th precincts saw an 80%, 66.7% and 50% increase, respectively. Conversely, the 52nd Precinct saw the biggest drop in murders, 50% decline from 12 in 2022 to six so far this year.

The 41st Precinct is also the only one of the 12 where crime is up in every single category from this week to the same week in 2022. Along with the 100% increase in the murder rate, there is also a 5.3% increase in reported rapes, 8.5% increase in robberies, 15.7% increase in felony assaults, 18.4% increase in burglaries, 7.4% increase in grand larceny and 52.1% increase in grand larceny auto. The 41st Precinct, located at 1035 Longwood Ave., serves the neighborhoods of Hunts Point and Longwood.
