TNBA 5K Turkey Trot set for Saturday, November 19

A fundraiser promoting healthy living has been scheduled for just before the Thanksgiving holiday.

The Throggs Neck Benevolent Association will hold its 21st Annual 5K Turkey Trot in memory of Geraldine Crowley-Crorkin on Saturday, November 19.

Registration is now underway for the race at Orchard Beach.

The race is named in honor of Crowley-Crorkin, who passed away in April 1995 from cancer shortly after giving birth, according to a previous Bronx Times article.

Crowley-Crorkin’s family were supporters of the TNBA, said organization board member and event coordinator Christopher Dalton, adding that the 5K is a great tribute to a wonderful person.

“It is a community-based event, and some people see each other only once a year at this event,” said Dalton, adding that participants walk, run, bicycle, skate and bring baby strollers along the route.

The 5K travels along the Orchard Beach promenade and on a path near the beach’s parking lot before returning to the promenade, he said.

The race is timed, and trophies are distributed to the top three finishers, as well as the oldest and youngest participants, said Dalton.

Despite a competitive aspect to the timed race, which usually draws 250 to 300 participants, there are people who are serious runners along with some not so serious runners taking part, said Dalton.

“Some of the older folks just walk leisurely and talk,” he said, illustrating that the Turkey Trot is for everyone.

The race funds the TNBA’s efforts to help people in the community deal with unforeseen circumstances due to catastrophic illnesses, issues with community members who either have no health insurance or not enough health insurance or who have had serious accidents, he said.

“We try to help where we possibly can and it is the community’s money that it given back to those in need,” he said of the TNBA’s charitable efforts. “The community trusts us with their money to give out as we see fit.”

Registration takes place at 10 a.m. on November 19 on the boardwalk near Orchard Beach’s food court and the Turkey Trot begins at 11 a.m., often towards the southern end of the promenade.

A final course map will be available the day of the race.

Pre-registration is $30, and needs to be postmarked by Thursday, November 10.

Registration the day of the race is $40.

The fee includes a race, T-shirt and a post-race party at Michael’s Waterfront Dining at the Turner Club.

If you would like to attend the party, but do not intend to race, you can do so for a fee of $20.

The TNBA holds a number of events during the year, including the Turkey Trot every November and an annual dinner dance in January.
