The Amazing Bronx River Flotilla

May 6, 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Join the Bronx River Alliance for a four-mile paddle down the Bronx River to raise funds for both the river and the group’s paddling program. People of all ages are encouraged to take advantage of this limited opportunity to paddle through the only freshwater river in all of New York City. Imagining a Safer Bronx River Road – Walk Audit

May 6, 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

Join the Bronx River Alliance, Beczak Environmental Education Center and the LYFE Coalition on an insightful walk to experience the conditions of Bronx River Road and the spaces and resources the surrounding community is cut off from. Learn more about the details of the event here.

Bronx Food and Farm Tour

May 13, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Celebrate the interesting sites along the beautiful Bronx River during Bronx Week 2023! This tour will start with a visit to the longstanding and productive River Garden, one of the oldest community gardens in the Bronx. The rest of the tour will consist of a fun and healthy food tasting at Starlight Park and a visit to the nearby Concrete Plant Park, a former concrete plant that now hosts the Bronx River Foodway, one of NYC’s only edible food forests. Starlight Festival

May 13, 12 p.m.-3 p.m.

Join the Bronx River Alliance and Assemblymember Kenny Burgos for the first annual Starlight Festival in celebration of the revitalization of the Bronx River ecosystem. The free community event will include giveaways of rain barrels and fresh produce, a walking tour of Starlight Park’s rain gardens, family-friendly games, arts and crafts, and access to many more community resources. Teens can drop by the Bronx Library Center to explore fun video games to play with each other and talk about them. Participants will discuss what they like and dislike about the games they play and suggest ways to improve them.

Edgar Allan Poe Tour at Poe Cottage

May 6, 3 p.m.-4 p.m.

Join the Bronx Library Center for a tour of Edgar Allan Poe Cottage to see its current exhibition on display, called “The Death of Edgar and Virginia Poe.” This tour will start at the library, so make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring a friend for the trip to the cottage! Hip-Hop Fever!

Celebrate 50 years of hip-hop in the borough that birthed the genre at the “Hip-Hop Fever!” concert at Lehman Center. Movies Under the Stars: “Minions: The Rise of Gru”

May 3, 8 p.m.–11 p.m.

Grab a blanket and enjoy a family-friendly outdoor movie showing of “Minions: The Rise of Gru” in Indian Field at Van Cortlandt Park. This movie follows young Gru, who tries to join a group of supervillains called the Vicious 6 after they oust their leader. When things go wrong, Gru and his Minions try to escape and come across the ex-leader of the Vicious 6, who becomes an unlikely source for help.

Super Seedlings!

May 6, 13, 20 and 27, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.

Visit this free, kid-friendly and nature-oriented event at Van Cortlandt Park. Curious and adventurous kids are to welcome dig, plant seeds and create crafts together while learning how to care for a garden and the environment around them every Saturday through April. Spring Wreath Making

May 13, 1:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m.

Head to Van Cortlandt Park’s garden and compost site to learn how to make beautiful wreaths in celebration of the springtime. Workshop attendees first will head into the park’s forest to harvest vines to use as a base for the wreaths. You’ll then return to the garden site to create and decorate the wreaths using a mix of natural and artificial materials, including seasonal flowers from the garden. Learn more and get tickets here.

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month: Nature Calligraphy

Celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month at Van Cortlandt Park! Learn about the history of how nature has influenced Chinese calligraphy, and even learn how to write some words and symbols using a brush and paper.

Movies Under the Stars: DC League of Super-Pets

Experience a refreshing, family-friendly movie showing of “DC League of Super-Pets” at Indian Field in Van Cortlandt Park. Sun Printing: Cyanotype

May 5, 10 and 12, 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Discover the magic of sun printing at Poe Park on Wednesdays and Fridays through May. Visitors will learn how to make a cyanotype — an old type of photographic print that uses a special UV-sensitive blue ink and the power of the sun — to create beautiful images.

Learn to Shoot Manual Photography

May 9 and 10, 3 p.m.-5 p.m.

Take your photography skills to the next level at Poe Park’s free manual photography workshops, which take place every Tuesday and Wednesday through April. Learn new techniques and concepts that will help you have more creative control over your images and help you get better at taking pictures.

Concert: John Benitez Latin Jazz Group

May 13, 4 p.m.-5:30 p.m.

Enjoy a free, live musical performance from Grammy-winning bassist, composer and arranger John Benitez at Poe Park in the midst of spring. The Bronx-based artist, who was born and raised in Puerto Rico, will be leading his Latin jazz sextet for this special outdoor concert. Seating is limited, so make sure to show up early.

Learn to Knit with Sandra Saez Ramirez

May 4, 6, 9, 11 and 13, 1 p.m.-3 p.m.

Seniors are invited to learn about the ins and outs of knitting from teaching artist Sandra Saez Ramirez at the Throgs Neck Library. Throughout a series of workshops, participants will learn and practice a variety of fundamental knitting techniques, creating a scarf or small bag as their final project. People of all ages are welcome to enjoy a night of dancing to their favorite salsa, bachata, merengue and reggaeton hits at the Williamsbridge Oval Recreation Center. The night will begin with a 30-minute salsa instruction followed by social dancing.

“The Comedy of Errors”

May 7, 1 p.m.-2:30 p.m.

Visit Williamsbridge Oval for a free, contemporary musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s “The Comedy of Errors,” presented by Mobile Unit. The play is about the mayhem and hilarious confusion that ensues after two sets of separated twins navigate an identity crisis. This new adaptation of Shakespeare’s work features songs in English and Spanish, embracing music from all over Latin America.

Family Day at Williamsbridge Oval Park

May 11, 4 p.m.-7 p.m.

Join NYC Parks and Councilmember Eric Dinowitz for a dedicated family day at Williamsbridge Oval Park! Kids will get to participate in all kinds of fun activities at the event, like games, obstacle courses and sports.

Movies Under the Stars: “Encanto”

May 18, 8 p.m.-11 p.m.

Enjoy a free, family-friendly showing of “Encanto” at Williambridge Oval! The popular Disney movie is about a multi-generational family who lives in a magical house in the mountains of Colombia and how one child in the household navigates being the only one to not receive a magical gift.

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month: Gingko Tree Celebration

May 6, 1 p.m.-2 p.m.

Join Crotona Park’s urban park rangers for a special Asian Pacific American Heritage Month event, where you’ll learn all about Ginkgo trees and their significance in Asian cultures and folklore. Attendees will also get to create fun, Ginkgo-inspired crafts.

Join NYC Parks and Councilmember Amanda Farías for a public silent disco event at Castle Hill Playground. Bronxites of all ages are invited to come out and get their groove on while listening to popular music through headphones. This is a great way listen to some music and socialize with others in a quiet yet communal setting.

Movies Under the Stars: “Coco”

May 10, 8:15 p.m.-11:15 p.m.

Visit Claremont Park for a free outdoor screening of the popular Disney movie “Coco.” The touching film follows a boy named Miguel who dreams of becoming a famous guitar player, but must seek forgiveness from his ancestors to lift a curse that was placed on his for stealing a guitar.
