Community Day at the Bronx Zoo!

March 24, 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.

Enjoy a free, fun-filled day at the Bronx Zoo sponsored by Council Member Rafael Salamaca. People of all ages will enjoy a continental breakfast at the zoo’s Dancing Crane Pavilion followed by educational activities led by the Bronx Zoo’s staff. Sign up for the fun and accessible event here.

Salsa Lesson and Party!

Visit The Bronx Museum for an exciting night filled with music and dance in celebration of the history of salsa in the South Bronx! Learn all about salsa dancing alongside professional dance instructors and socialize with other Bronx residents. This free event is open to people of all ages and skill levels.

Curator-led Tours: Swagger and Tenderness

March 18, 2 p.m.-3 p.m.

Take a trip to The Bronx Museum for a guided tour of Swagger and Tenderness, a portrait exhibition of Bronx residents by John Ahearn and Rigoberto Torres. Spend the afternoon learning about the exhibition from guest curators at the South Bronx-based museum.

Family Time: Double Dutch

Take your friends and family to The Bronx Museum for a fun afternoon of jump roping. Learn how to double dutch with experienced instructors from the museum. People of all ages and skill levels are welcome to join this free and interactive event.

Crotona Park

Outdoor Skills: Camping 101

March 18, 1 p.m.-2:30 p.m.

Learn outdoor skills that will prepare you for any situation in the wilderness at this camping workshop hosted by Crotona Park’s Urban Park Rangers. You’ll learn all kinds of tips and tricks that will enhance your knowledge of the natural world in addition to useful information about equipment, techniques and best practices to set up a great outdoor campsite.

Nature’s Workshop: Insect-Inspired Art

March 19, 11 a.m.-12 a.m.

Spend a Sunday during Women’s History Month learning about the famed entomologist, naturalist and scientific illustrator Maria Sybilla Merian. Art and bug enthusiasts will get to explore some of her most detailed artistic pieces inspired by insects, and all attendees will get to try their hands at nature art and illustrations inspired by her work.

Signs of Spring Hike

March 26, 11 a.m.-12 a.m.

Exercise your mind and your body on an enriching hike through Crotona Park. Attendees will hike through the park’s trails while learning about how nature adapts to changing seasons and identifying the signs of spring.

 

Bronx River

Winter Birding with NYC Audubon

March 15, 7 a.m.-8:30 a.m.

Join the Bronx River Alliance and NYC Audubon on a relaxing walk along the Bronx River, where you’ll get to see a variety of beautiful birds that are part of the river’s ecosystem. You’ll also learn interesting facts about biodiversity and wildlife in an urban community like the Bronx. Extra binoculars will be provided. Attendees are encouraged to register for the outdoor event here.

 

Wave Hill

Family Art Project: Divine Desert Dwellers

March 18 and 19, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Visit the Kerlin Learning Center at Wave Hill for an exciting family art project, where you’ll learn about the plants that grow in warmer places of the world. Kids will get creative by drawing their own pictures of cacti onto plexiglass to learn about how the resilient plants survive in dry, harsh conditions.

Winter Workspace 2023: Drop-In Sunday

March 19, 1 p.m.-3 p.m.

Wave Hill visitors are encouraged to engage with artists taking advantage of the garden’s Winter Workspace, where artists have access to free studio space to experiment with art and nature. Visitors will have the chance to view the original creative work of three artists in their studios and directly ask them questions about it.

Succulent Spring Division and Repotting Demonstration

March 19, 1 p.m.- 2 p.m.

Get more out of your succulent plants by learning how to propagate them at this free demonstration. Watch a Wave Hill garden expert divide and repot different kinds of succulents while guiding and instructing you through the process. You’ll have the chance to ask questions and buy your own succulents after the event.

Cooking Demonstration: Cooking with Cacti

March 19, 2 p.m.-3 p.m.

Try something new at Wave Hill’s cooking with cacti demonstration, led by Bronx-based chef Nick Acosta. Learn how to prepare and serve a delicious range of dishes involving cacti, ranging from savory Mexican nopales to sweet dragonfruit smoothies.

Concert: Alea

March 26, 2 p.m.-3 p.m.

Enjoy a rich and powerful performance by Colombian-born singer-songwriter at Wave Hill. Her music embraces the sounds of cumbia, vallenato, rancheras, jazz and American pop, bringing a fusion of culture to the Bronx. Buy tickets and register for the hour-long concert here.

Bronx Children’s Museum

New Exhibit: ‘Elebooyah!: The C.G. Esperanza Studio Show’

March 18, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Step into the mind of Bronx-born artist C.G. Esperanza in his dream studio. In this exhibit attendees will explore Esperanza’s early influences and see examples of his artwork, including his children’s books. Reserve tickets here.

Mask-making and Frida Kahlo

March 18, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Celebrate Women’s History Month through family-friendly activities inspired by women from the Bronx. Bronx-born teaching artist C.G. Esperanza will at the museum all day, leading families in a fun mask-making activity. There will also be other programming focused on famous artist Frida Kahlo, including storytime and a drop-in art activity. Reserve tickets here.

Silent Disco

Bronxites of all ages are invited to get their groove on at this Silent Disco event at the Williamsbridge Oval Recreation Center. Dance and socialize with others while listening to the same music through headphones instead of through loud speakers.

NYC Parks Presents “Everything Women”

March 14-29, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Visit the Poe Park Visitors Center for an art show all about women, featuring women artists. The show is part of the center’s month-long March Showcase in celebration of Women’s History Month.

 

New York Botanical Garden

The Orchids of the Herbarium

March 18, 19, 25 and 26, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Visit The Orchid Show at the New York Botanical Garden to learn all about how orchid specimens are collected, preserved, mounted, and categorized. You’ll get to view tons of stunning orchids on display at this indoor event, and even get to create a specimen to take home with you.

Children’s Art Carnival

Bring your family to the Children’s Art Carnival at the Hunts Point Recreation Center! Youth between the ages of six and 14 will enjoy a range of fun activities, including creative art projects, canvas art painting, an art contest and more.

Saturday Matinee: Once

Movie lovers are invited to attend a free screening of “Once” hosted by The Bronx Library Center as part of their March film series. The movie follows the love story between a busker and a woman who he hears playing a demo piano in a shop at lunchtime. The two collaborate on music and embark on a creative journey together.

Little Movers STarts: Story and Arts

Hamlet in Harlem

March 16, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Watch a funny, yet insightful play about Shakespeare, murder, mystery, offensive stereotypes and cultural appropriation at the Hostos Center for the Arts and Culture. The play follows a director and the hilariously offensive mistakes he makes while trying to produce a Latino version of “Hamlet” set in Harlem, despite not knowing anything about Latinos, “Hamlet” or Harlem. The performance at 2 p.m. will be free, and the evening performance will cost $5, $8 and $10 for students, seniors, and regular attendees, respectively. Learn more and register here.
